Apple could turn to smartphone rival Sony to improve the next-generation iPhone’s camera, online whispers suggest.
In recent years, Apple has made more and more moves to temper its reliance on its processor-supplier Samsung, with whom it is now locked in a fight to the death at the top of the smartphone sector.
However, that doesn’t appear to mean it’s entirely averse to forging ties with its competitors. Not if posts on Chinese Sony fansite Digi-Wo are anything to go by, anyway.
According to the site, which boasts an enviable track record with breaking Sony news, the iPhone 6 will feature a Sony Exmor IMX220 camera sensor, with 13-megapixels to play with. Sony’s snapper also features 1080p video recording.
By way of comparison, the iPhone 5S packs a relatively paltry eight megapixels, after Apple opted only to tweak the iPhone 5’s camera for its current-gen flagship.
Assuming Digi-Wo’s claim is on the money, it would mean iPhone fans can look forward to a hefty, very welcome boost to their favourite handset’s camera credentials.
However, although Sony does provide parts for iPhones, there is good reason to question the story’s veracity.
Not least because one of Sony’s big sell for its Xperia phones are their stellar cameras, as part of its strategy of promoting them as offering the ‘best of Sony in a smartphone’.
In light of that, it’s hard to see the rationale behind giving away one of the Xperia range’s USPs to one of its biggest rivals.
Everything should become clear soon enough, though. Apple is set to unveil the iPhone 6 in its 5.5-inch and 4.7-inch iterations in September.
