When Sigma first announced its 18-35mm f/1.8 lens for DSLR cameras with an APS-C sensor, it was quickly recognised as one of the fastest (if not the fastest) zoom lenses ever made. Unfortunately, as it often is when a third-party lens first hits the market, it was initially not available in all camera mounts, and users of Sony and Pentax cameras were left out of the fun. According to a recent note by Sigma Japan, however, this is about to change.
Towards the end of the month, the Sony A-mount and Pentax K-mount versions of Sigma’s 18-35mm f/1.8 lens are expected to be shipping. It is unclear from the note, however, whether they will be shipping worldwide or just in Japan. The addendum, “Please contact your nearest country representative regarding stock availability” however raises hope that the lens will in fact be available all around the globe in late June 2014.
What makes this lens so interesting is the fact that it sports a constant f/1.8 apeture throughout its — admittedly limited — focal length range, which is unprecedented. With an equivalent focal length range of 27-52.5mm on most APS-C cameras, it is also a very versatile lens for general photography, covering everything from wide-angle to a normal perspective â and all that with great light-gathering capabilities, and at a very competitive price.
