One of Sony’s most beloved and critically acclaimed point-and-shoot cameras is getting yet another successor. Riding the RX100 II’s wave of momentum, Sony on Wednesday introduced a new follow up, the RX100 III, which now comes with a built-in OLED viewfinder that addresses one of the biggest customer requests. It turns the camera more into a professional-grade shooter, and not something you wildly point in the hopes of capturing something good. That’s not the only new thing coming to the RX100 III.
Continuing on with the same dashing design, Sony’s new cam sports a 20.1-megapixel 1.0-type back-illuminated CMOS sensor (same as the RX100 II), with the addition of a BIONZ X processor present in some of the company’s more high-end cameras, including the a7, a7R and a7S models. Processors in cameras are important for converting image data into the format stored on memory, which is important for a camera’s overall speed. That means you’ll get the crispest possible images as quickly as possible; the processor ensures the camera won’t have to think between shots.
As for the lens, the RX100 II comes with a ZEISS 24-70mm F1.8-2.8; at 70mm, Sony says the maximum aperture of F2.8 allows the camera to take in twice as much light as the two previous RX100s. On the lower end of the spectrum, the 24mm length means the RX100 III is perfect for landscape and street photography, though you have the flexibility to zoom in should your subject be farther away. In addition to stats about aperture and focal length, Sony says its lens has a built-in 3-stop neutral density filter, making it easier to shoot in a wider range of outdoor conditions (like, for instance, when the light is blown out and really bright).
As for that OLED electronic viewfinder, Sony says it sports ZEISS T Coating and a 1.4 million dot resolution. It can pop in and out of the top of the camera, so you can simply point-and-shoot your shots on a whim, or better frame your shots by looking through the viewfinder. “The viewfinder achieves exceptional corner-to-corner clarity, and includes an eye sensor that automatically switches between viewfinder and monitor display,†Sony said. Even with that addition, the RX100 III doesn’t sacrifice on pocketability, which is one of the camera’s most alluring features.
Other features of the RX100 III include the ability to record Full HD video, still image output in 4K, an Fn key, customizable control ring, and Wi-Fi and PlayMemories support. The camera also comes with NFC, meaning it’s compatible with Xperia and other Android devices for instant sharing.
Sony says the RX100 III will be available this June for $800, and will be showcased for the first time this weekend at the PMA Big Photo Show in Los Angeles. You can also check out the RX100 III online on Sony’s site.
