Sony QX10 and QX100 Lens Specs Review - Must Have Accessories

Sony is good at releasing revolutionary products before anyone else.

They did it with the Walkman, and now they are taking the world by storm with their range of smart lenses. Although you might never of realized you wanted one, when you realize what a smart lens does, you will be amazed. Two of the newest smart lenses from Sony include the QX10 and QX100, this guide will look at exactly what you should expect when these are available to buy.

What are the QX10 and QX100?

According to the official blurb, both the QX100 and QX10 are smart lenses. They are actually very compact and clever cameras which can be attached to a smart phone. Think of them as an upgrade to your current camera. Rather than just being a lens which is placed over your existing camera, these are a complete new camera. This gives you the benefit of having a very high quality camera attached to your phone.

The camera doesn’t only fit onto your phone, it actually communicates with it. You can use your phones screen as the viewfinder to take the perfect shot. It’s even possible to detach the camera and use it at some distance away while still being able to review images on the screen. Once photos are taken they can also be shared online.

QX10

The QX10 is the entry level model from Sony, it’s designed to suit most people who are looking for a better camera for their phone. The QX10 features impressive 10x optical zoom in a very compact package. It also has an 18MP back lit sensor which allows it to capture images even in low light. The QX10 makes use of Sony’s revolutionary G Lens technology to capture the very best images possible.

QX100

The QX100 is the QX10?s bigger brother. It’s designed for people who want even more from their camera phone and is targeted mainly at professionals. This has a very large 20.2 Mega Pixel back lit sensor to capture very high quality images. The lens also features Carl Zeiss Optics to give you complete control over the photos you are taking.

Compatibility

Sony has been very sensible with the QX10 and QX100. Instead of making them available only to Sony Xperia users, the lenses are actually compatible with most brands of phone. As long as it runs iOS or a new version of Android then it should be possible to use it. Free apps are available to control the lens from within your phone. There is also a memory card slot where images can be stored if being used without a smartphone. There are settings to control whether the photos are saved onto the phone, the memory card, or both.

Should I buy one?

If you really love photography and are a fan of gadgets then what’s not to love with the QX10 and QX100. They are very capable digital cameras which can give your phone a new lease of life. You get to take photos in 18 Mega Pixels while being able to use a 5 inch screen on your phone as a viewfinder. The flexibility of being able to detach the camera and still use it is great to take photos from certain angles or inside areas you couldn’t normally fit a camera.

The only minor downside to this is that it will add quite a lot of bulk to the size of your smartphone. That said, it’s unlikely meant to be left attached all the time, instead it can be snapped on and off in seconds. They are fairly expensive since they are basically digital cameras without a screen, however the amount of technology crammed inside more than justifies this.
