Jutting out into the clouds, high above a yawning gorge, the viewing balcony in Trollstigen, Norway, is one of the most stunning buildings in the world.
Now this award-winning picture of the observation point, suspended in the mists next to a waterfall, is the centre-piece in a new exhibition of the finest architectural photography of 2013.
Ken Schluchtmann’s still, which won first place in the Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards, is one of nine photos to go on display in Britain for the first time in a London gallery.
Balcony of the gods: Photographer Ken Schluchtmann won the Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards 2013 with this stunning picture of Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekten’s designed viewing point called Nasjonale Turistveger in Trollstigen, Norway
The Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Award aims to put the focus on the skill and creativity of the photographer.Â
The
competition judges were looking for the best photographs which captured how buildings and architecture sit together harmoniously in the landscape.
Among the images shortlisted for the prize, which was awarded for the most eye-catching composition, used of light, scale, atmosphere, sense of place, is Keith Hunter’s photograph of Liverpool Central Library, England.
His striking photograph captured the essence of the building, according to judges.
Sense of place: The Dalian Congress Centre, China by Coop Himmelblau Architects, was overall Runner-Up
Striking: The Blue Planet, in Copenhagen, Denmark, designed by 3XN was praised in the exteriors category or the competition, for ‘communiting the nature of the building’
Sculptural: The Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre Pavilion, designed by architects Snøhetta, is set against the Dovre Mountains in Norway and used as an education centre by charity the Wild Reindeer Foundation
Friederike Meyer, Editor of Bau Welt, a leading architectural magazine in Germany,
said: ‘Described as much more than mere reproductions, Schluchtmannâs
images penetrate to the very essence of his subjects.
‘They distil light and colour in a long process involving both analogue and digital techniques, imbuing photographs with an unusually sculptural depth. Some say they create incarnations of design in the way that other photographers create incarnations of fashion.’
Other remarkable photographs being shown in large scale c-type prints beauty include Adam Mørkâs âexterior shortlistedâ photograph of The Blue Planet, Denmark and in âthe buildings in use categoryâ Fernando Guerraâs striking image of Pátio des Escolas, Portugal.
Stunning: Tim Van de Velde’s picture of Bruder Klaus Kapelle, or The Brother Klaus Field Chapel, a privately endowed and built Catholic chapel above the village Mechernich, Germany, which was designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, was commended by competition judges
Dramatic: Duccio Malagemba took this powerful image from the inside of the Dalian Congress Centre, in Liaoning, China, was designed by Coop Himmelblau Architects
Praise: Large Bounhar’s picture of Absolute Towers, Canada, left, by MAD Architects, and Fernando Guerra’s image of a woman walking through the shadows cast by Citta del Sole, in Rome, right, which was designed by Labics, were both shortlisted for the award
The exhibition takes place in a three
storey renovated factory called Werkstatt – or work shop in German – in
the heart of Clerkenwell, belonging to architectural material supplier
Sto Group.
The show runs until April 25 in the gallery at 7â9 Woodbridge Street, London.
Keith Hunter’s photograph of Liverpool Central Library, England, captured the essence of the building, according to judges
kaleidoscopic: This dazzling photograph of the Shanghai Museum of Glass, China by Coordination, was taken by Ken Schluchtmann
Atmosphere: James Leynse’s image of the exterior approach to the Shanghai South Railway Station in Shanghai, China, shows the city’s skyline breaking out of the fog
Harmony: Ken Schluchtmann’s photo of this walkway down to the water edge in Tungeneset, Norway, designed by Code Arkitektur, showed beautifully set the building in its wider context and environment, the competition judges said
Intricate: Duccio Malagemba was praised for this photo of the Olympic Stadium, in Beijing, China, widely known as the bird’s nest, designed by Herzog de Meuron Architects
Building in use: Fernando Guerra offers a different perspective on the world with this shortlisted photograph of Patio des Escolas, in Portugal, by Jose Barra and Goncalo Bryne
Euphoria: Jim Stephenson’s photograph of Shangrila at the Glastonbury Festival, England, was shortlisted for the building in use category which aimed to highlight how people interact with architecture
