Nikon"s stylish Df full-frame supports pre-AI lenses, but sorry, no video

Nikon’s roots in photography puncture deeper than most, so it’s not startling that when it finally motionless to cocktail out a retro camera it went usually a small serve than everybody else. In this box it means not usually a de rigueur two-tone silver-and-black physique bristling with dials (though we can get it in simple black as well), though also full support for a company’s pre-1977 non-AI (Automatic Maximum Aperture Indexing, in other words, involuntary metering) lenses without fiddling.

Nikon’s blast from a past (pictures)

One intensity downside: a camera doesn’t support video.

Given that, I’ve got churned feelings about Nikon’s sensor choice. The camera uses a sensor and Expeed 3 processor from a D4, that will be dual years aged in January. The advantage of that sensor is that we get about dual serviceable stops of low-light opening over a newer ones. But for sharpness and tonal range, if we allow to DXO’s methodology, the sensor isn’t even as good as a D610′s. The doubt becomes: are there some-more people who wish to fire in a low than who wish best-in-class photos in splendid or low light? I’m rather prone to consider that a OLPF-free sensor from a D800E is a improved choice for this model. That sensor in this physique would unequivocally torment a imagination of a form of “passionate photographer” Nikon wants to attract. And while a D4 sensor has some-more latitude, a D800E’s is positively no slump in low light.

In and with a camera, Nikon will be reissuing a tack 50mm f1.8 lens to offer as partial of a kit. While a lens has a same visual components as a stream version, it’s assembled of aluminum.

Here’s a cut of a increasingly rival full-frame field:

I’m compliant to like a Df, as it’s glossy with dials and a good full-frame sensor. Nikon positively gets points for style, and we determine that a lot of folks won’t skip a video. But we consider that sensor will keep it from being a slam-dunk choice among photographers who’ve gravitated to likewise targeted models like a Fujifilm X100S. Sony’s A7R lacks an visual viewfinder, doesn’t surpass for autofocus, and isn’t as shiny, though in sell it’s a lot cheaper, significantly smaller, and produces stellar photos; a Nikon D610 is a lot cheaper with a lot some-more facilities and we assume (I haven’t tested it yet, though it’s flattering most a same as a D600) produces a same good photos. Yes, for a Df we can go on a binge with all a aged Nikon lenses we can scoop adult low on eBay, though if you’re that photogeeky afterwards we know that these days we can mountain roughly any lens on any physique with a small work.
