A much misunderstood state, Texas possesses such a strong appeal
that even those over 4000 miles away are powerless to
resist. Dublin based Photographer Kathrin
Baumbach, who has shot for Spin and The Irish
Times, travelled to Texas to capture the state’s more
remarkable residents. “I have been fascinated with Texas for years
and finally went to explore it for myself to see if myth and
reality match up.” explains Baumbach. ”I was most surprised by
how at home I felt it Texas. In the beginning I thought I
would feel much more like an outsider, but everyone was
very welcoming.” It is the shots of the young children
belonging to the Kibbe family that will be most shocking to some.
“I met the Kibbe family through a mutual friend. I was
very respectful towards their lifestyle. I was very determined
about not having any prejudice and be open to their different
way of living. They were also very responsible in
their handling of the firearms. “ In fact, the only
threat she felt throughout the entire experience had nothing to do
with weaponry. “An hour into having been at the ranch I was bitten
by a Javelina, a wild pig,” she laughs.
