Sony Launches SmartWatch 2, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 in the US
Sony‘s trio of inter-compatible gadgets, the SmartWatch 2, Xperia Z Ultra phablet and Xperia Z1 smartphone, is now available in the United States.
The SmartWatch 2, which was first introduced in June at Shanghai’s Mobile Asia Expo, is designed as a companion to your Sony smartphone, tablet or phablet. The dust-proof, water-resistant device has a 1.6-inch, 220 x 176 pixel screen and 3-4 days of battery life, according to Sony.
The SmartWatch 2 supports NFC for easy pairing with Android 4.0+ smartphones, and is compatible with Gmail, Facebook and Twitter. It retails for $199.95.
We’ve also known about Sony’s 6.4-inch Xperia Z Ultra since the summer. It sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and an 8-megapixel camera, and has a retail price of $649.99 (for the HSPA+ variant) or $679.99 (for the LTE variant).
The newest device in this bunch is the Xperia Z1, Sony’s 20.7-megapixel flagship smartphone that retails for $669.99. You can read our detailed review of it here.
Each of these devices is available now in Sony’s online store and a selection of other online stores, as well as select Sony’s retail stores.

A New Sony Flagship Sets Sail
The Sony Xperia Z1 is Sony’s new flagship Android smartphone, featuring a 20.7-megapixel camera and water resistance up to five feet. We tried it out at the IFA Berlin trade show.
Camera
One of the highlights of the Xperia Z1 is its 20.7-megapixel camera, one of the highest megapixel counts in smartphone cameras today.
Screen
The Z1 has 5-inch full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display, enhanced by Sony’s Triluminous technology. The TFT isn’t the best for off-angle viewing, however.
Grip
Holding onto the Xperia Z1 is a bit more challenging than other phones.
Left Side
On the left are buttons for power, volume and a dedicated camera button.
Right Side
On the right are charging ports. Slots and other ports (such as for a microSD card) are protected with “doors” to keep the phone water-resistant.
Bottom
The bottom of the phone has a speaker, which plays passable, if somewhat tinny sound.
Water Resistant
The Xperia Z1 is even more water resistant than the Xperia Z, able to withstand being submerged in 5 feet of water.
