You might have heard that Nikon had recently introduced the world’s first waterproof camera with interchangeable lens. This new mirror-less camera is dubbed the Nikon AW1 and comes across as shockproof as well as freeze-proof.
Nikon’s new 1-Series AW1, is a 14.2-megapixel camera that combines the features of Nikon’s J3 mirrorless cameras and their AW110 waterproof compact cameras.
The AW1 is rated waterproof down to 49 feet, and even the popup flash strobe is waterproof. But unfortunately, you can’t take the camera to the deepbottom of the sea. However, depending on the model you can additional 50 or even 100 meters depth as waterproof.
According to the manufacturer, the Nikon AW1 is shockproof to two meters (6.6 feet), and is claimed to be freezeproof up to  -10°C (14°F).
Apart from its physical toughness, the Nikon AW1 also includes a few excellent features, such as an integrated built-in GPS for automatic geo-tagging, an altimeter, depth gauge, electronic compass, and horizon indicator. It also boasts built-in Wi-Fi.
The Nikon AW1 comes with a knurled metal grip that makes it easy to hold the camera. The body of the camera is significantly heavier, which is the result of the extra hardware in the camera.
Like the Nikon AW100 , you can control the Nikon AW1 in hands-free mode, by using an Action Control function. That means, you can place the camera in hands-free mode and still can navigate menus, change settings, and even operate playback functions by simply tilting the device.
The Nikon AW1 comes with a 73-point hybrid autofocus system, 3-inch LCD panel, flash strobe, battery (EN-EL20 good for 220 shots), storage (SD / SDHC / SDXC) and connectivity (USB 2.0 High Speed plus Type-C Mini HDMI).
With Nikon AW1, you can shoot at 15 full-res frame per second with autofocus for 22 frames. It also lets you shoot movies at up to Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixel) resolution, with a frame rate of 60 interlaced fields per second (1080i60) or 30 frames per second (1080p30).
Nikon AW1 will be available this month and is priced at $800. A twin-lens kit along with the 1 NIKKOR AW 10mm f/2.8 lens will come with a price tag of $1000.
Although the Nikon AW1 doesn’t take you to the deep sea, it is still sufficient for the recreational divers, who typically don’t go deeper than a few meters.
