Sony Honami Features Revealed G Lens Could Be Among 20-MP Cameras Unique Features

Additional leaked photos purporting to belong to the Sony Honami/Xperia i1 have emerged on the Internet, seemingly backing up one rumored specification (20 megapixels for the rear camera sensor) and G Lens technology as one of the camera’s features.

The Sony Honami, as many believe it to be, will be the Japanese company’s answer to the Nokia Lumia 1020 and Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom in the so-called “camera phone” market.  While about a decade ago all phones that came with cameras were called “camera phones”, the term now applies to smartphones that come with professional camera specifications, features and/or functionalities, like the aforementioned Lumia 1020, Galaxy S4 Zoom, and now the Honami.  The device is expected to be launched early next month as Sony’s next flagship after the Xperia Z (and arguably the Xperia Z Ultra), and it promises to offer more than the usual 5-inch, 1080p display and the definitely impressive 20-megapixel rear camera.

The leaks, which were published on a Vietnamese Facebook page, may be best taken lightly for the meantime, due to the rather unorthodox source and the fact that the photos have since been removed.  The Sony Honami’s camera, apparently, will also be capable of 5248 x 3936 resolution photos at 20 megapixels and 4:3 aspect ratio, and photos snapped at 8 megapixels in 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios.  As the leaked images supposedly belong to a prototype, this might not what we’ll be seeing when Sony launches the Honami/i1 in about a month or so.

Other features of the Honami’s camera include an LED flash and a small lens – this is peculiar, as previous Honami rumors suggested Xenon flash support for the camera.  The G Lens branding refers to a “gold” standard of lens quality, which should give the Honami a professional-level camera lens and status as a “camera phone” in the modern-day definition.  According to a press release, G Lenses are “exceptional not only for their superior in-focus image quality, but for the beauty of defocused background areas (bokeh) as well”, and the G standard is “only accorded to lenses of the highest performance.”
