Just as an argument has raged for the best part of 30 years between Windows and Mac users as to which operating system is the best, a similar tribal war has raged between professional (and talented amateur) photographers as to whether Nikon or Canon rules the SLR and latterly DSLR roost. Now SquareTrade has waded into the rivalry between the two iconic companies’ offerings with a drop test.
Canon and Nikon cameras have always been very evenly matched and have inspired huge loyalty from their respective users.
The insurance company, famous for testing smartphones and tablets to destruction in order to give them an accidental damage rating — and of course draw attention to the need to insure them — has decided to subject cameras to the same treatment for the first time, dropping a Canon EOS Rebel T5i and a Nikon D500 from a height of four feet (1.2m) to assess the damage.
As one would expect, the result was that the detachable lenses of both cameras were destroyed but, with new lenses attached, both cameras continued to function without any signs of internal damage. So far, so even. However, while the body of the Nikon camera sustained noticeable damage, the Canon came out of the drop test with its body unscathed, which, when added to the results of the other tests, led Square Trade to proclaim it the most resilient to accidental damage.
“As we head into the summer, many of us are thinking about upgrading our camera and video equipment — whether for professional or personal use. There’s not a lot of information out there about how cameras respond to the drops and spills that go along with ordinary use,” commented SquareTrade CMO Ty Shay.
