Field Trip On Film: Photos from the 2014 Festival

This past weekend we went to Arts Crafts’ Charles Spearin Showcase Field Trip music festival with the intention of taking in all the wonders the festival has to offer: Hoola hoop forests, at least four hundred babies wearing some form of ear protection, and even the odd person catching a nap behind one of the old Fort York buildings.

This year there were a couple dozen professional photographers, each with (what we could only imagine is really expensive) gear hanging around their necks. You’ve also probably already seen a lot of Instagram photos from the weekend, because apparently at least a third of the crowd spent their time buried in a cell phone (see this post’s featured image).

We took a different route; I was armed with the mid-70′s Pentax Spotmatic F SLR camera my grandparents handed down to me and several rolls of 35mm film provided by our amazing partners for this series, Downtown Camera.

Field Trip Photo 1First, the setting. There’s nothing more Toronto than being surrounded by condos.

Bry WebbOkay, forget the condos. Constantines played!

The DarcysFestival style was on-point. The Darcys‘ Jason Couse wins for best shades of the weekend.

AustraAustra‘s Katie Stelmanis’ shades were a close second.

Field Trip StickDancing was also a big part of the festival. While there were quite a few sensual slow-swayers out there, The Field Trip Stick was a show-stopper. #branchman

Kevin DrewKevin Drew‘s solo set was great. But even though Feist joined him for “You In Your Were,” the absence of Zach Galifianakis was palpable.

Brendan CanningTwo of the best parts of Broken Social Scene‘s headlining set: Brendan Canning‘s beautiful locks and the horn section’s asides.

HydraWe’re still debating whether or not Hydra is Mother Nature.

Washed OutWashed Out played in the rain. Despite the constant undertone of what Fucked Up‘s Damian Abraham described as “Dadcore,” we’re going to refrain from any dad jokes here.

Damian AbrahamSpeaking of Damian he bit apart roughly a dozen red balls during Fucked Up’s performance. About half of them made an appearance on his head.

Headphone KidRemember when I said there were all those young kids with headphones? Here’s proof.

Crowd SurfingCrowd surfing only made an appearance a two shows. Above, at Fucked Up. The other was someone in a lion costume at BADBADNOTGOOD.

Flying LotusBADBADNOTGOOD also gave us a festival staple: The sax solo.

Charles SpearinJust like the real at the festival, this collection of images wouldn’t be complete without Charles Spearin (Do Make Say Think, Hydra, Broken Social Scene, Kevin Drew’s solo band, A Tribe Called Red, Shad, Led Zeppelin)  making an appearance.

Thanks again to Downtown Camera for providing and developing the film!
