Samsung has unveiled a new supercharged camera phone, the Galaxy
K Zoom, with a 20.7-megapixel sensor. It is the follow-up device to
the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, which was introduced last year, and is
basically a variation on the Galaxy S5.
There is a 10x optical zoom on board and Optical Image
Stabiliser, along with some nifty camera software features
including a “selfie alarm” to help you take better timed selfies
and Pro Suggest mode, which allows you apply 10 optimised filters
to photos.Â
The K Zoom is twice as thick as the S5, but its with a 4.8-inch
display, the phone falls short of phablet proportions and has an
ergonomic grip that should make it easier to hold. The screen is
one of Samsung’s famously bright Super AMOLED panels, and with a
resolution of 1,280×720 pixels, it should be plenty sharp enough
for you to edit and upload your photos to social networks, even
though its 720p rather than Full HD.
Don’t
miss:
Powering the K Zoom are two separate processors — one quad-core
1.3GHz chip and a 1.7GHz dual-core chip (why? Not sure, but our
review will reveal the benefits here) — along with 2GB of RAM.
There is only 8GB of in-built memory on the K Zoom, which even the
most casual photographer would quickly exceed. Fortunately there is
also a microSD card slot, meaning the memory can be expanded by up
to 64GB — something we’d always recommend taking advantage of. The
phone runs the latest version of Android, 4.4 KitKat, and has
pretty much all the new software features introduced with the
Galaxy S5, including the full S-Health suite.
Pricing and availability for the K Zoom has yet to be announced.
We’re already seriously impressed with the S5′s camera skills, so
we’re excited to see what results the K Zoom can produce when we
give it the full review treatment ahead of its UK release.
