Spreading its majestic wings, a barn owl rises silently in the dead of night, pictured in a remarkably haunting image.

Now – thanks to new  technology – you don’t have to be a professional photographer to produce pictures as stunning  as this and the similarly striking one on the left, of a European eagle owl. They were taken using a special strobe-effect flash unit that has just hit the market.

For both images, Mail on Sunday photographer Les Wilson captured just one second of the bird’s flight in a single exposure using 15 flashes of light to produce the startling final effect.

He was operating the new Elinchrom ELC Pro-HD flash lights, which cost up to £1,899, and work with most cameras. ‘Like any new toy, you have to practise a lot to get it right,’  said Les, who was helped by staff from the Hawk Conservatory Trust near Andover, Hampshire.

‘I worked with animals that  are used to people and got them used to the strobe lighting.

‘I would not advise doing this with wild animals.’

No amount of technology will ever substitute genius, far from it mental prowess is what inspires technology breakthrough.

Fast strobing flash units have been available for more than a decade. I have a battery powered Metz unit that does this. I do not, however, have a suitable owl.

Some birds dont see electronic flash (apparently). I do know that if you try potographing certain bats near their nesting sites then they will abandon their young. Cant speak for other animals but do be aware of the possible effects. Annoy some of the bigger animals and be ready to run really fast in the dark.

One nicely frozen sharp shot looks better than these, and how many amateurs can afford the £1,899 price tag for the flash unit.

“Flash unit can turn ANYONE into a David Attenborough….which cost up to £1,899!” ====== I have a hard time with £18.99 – but then I am no David Attenborough.

Nearly £2000 for a flashing light can make folk think they need to be rich to take good photos. Buy a flashing torch for a fiver instead. Search youtube for photographers on a budget for other tips. There are many.

This is the man that teaches you that animals created themselves.
