Ricoh and CNN team up for Theta giveaway and contest

When we consider of a photojournalist, what kind of camera do we design them using? It’s substantially zero like a Ricoh Theta.

Ricoh and CNN are teaming adult for a Spherical Report 360 contest. Aspiring internal reporters (or anybody, really) can contention an letter (360 difference or less) about because they merit a Ricoh Theta, a compress camera that captures 360-degree images. Then 360 finalists will be comparison to accept one of a cameras. Subtle theme, eh?

From May 1 by Aug 31, participants can contention images. For any month of a contest, a monthly leader will get a Ricoh Commander watch. And in September, 3 finalists will be selected. The grand-prize leader gets a Pentax K-3 with 18-135mm lens, and dual runners-up get a Ricoh GR.

In box we missed it when it came out in 2013, a Ricoh Theta looks like an aged iPod nano with super wide-angle lenses on possibly side of a body. It captures 360-degree panoramas in each direction—up, down, sideways, diagonals and so on—with only one pull of a shutter. The panoramas can be exported in an interactive exclusive record and shared, kind of like a Lytro image. The shots are grainy even in good lighting, though, and during $400, it’s a bit of a novelty.
