Nikon offers free replacements for faulty D600 digital cameras

Jiji Press Nikon Corp. has announced it will replace D600 digital single-lens reflex cameras or provide an equivalent model free of charge if black spots remain noticeable on images even after repeated use of cleaning and parts replacement services.

The camera maker will offer free replacements worldwide, it said Friday. About 270,000 units of the D600 model have been shipped globally since September 2012.

The company took the step after a series of reports in China about granular black spots in images taken with the D600. According to Nikon, about 48,000 units of the D600 have been sold in China. The company receives about 300 to 400 free maintenance service requests there each month.

After the issue was covered in a program by state-run broadcaster China Central Television on March 15, Shanghai authorities ordered the company to suspend sales of the product.
