Sony QX10 and QX100 attachable lens cameras for your smartphone are a big hit

If you’re buying a new smartphone just for a better camera, the DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100 may be worth considering. Along with the Xperia Z1, Sony had introduced these two cool attachable lens cameras for Android and iOS handsets, early this month.

Who said camera phones are for noobs?

The accessory can basically be attached to a phone’s camera and act as an additional lens offering up to 10x optical zoom for better pictures. The best part is that if your device has NFC, you can use the handset’s screen as a viewfinder and detach the lens from the body in order shoot stuff wirelessly.

Picture how functional that would be at a crowded press event, concert or when your subject is placed in a tricky position which requires some bending and twisting of your arm. Videos can be shot in 1080/30p HD resolutions by both peripherals. The QX10 uses a 1/2.3? Exmor R CMOS sensor and features f/3.3 aperture.

The QX100 has a 1” Exmor R CMOS sensor and should be able to deal better with low light situations as compared to its sibling owing to its f/1.8 aperture. The former can take stills of 18MP and the latter is capable of capturing 20MP photos. The add-on stores everything shot through it and the same content is also hoarded in the smartphone’s memory.

Where to get one

These lenses apparently turned out to be a bigger hit that most people would have expected. Eager customers have emptied out the stock of QX100 from Sony Store are well as Amazon. According to the latter, the $498 accessory may be available again by October 15. Priced at up to $250, the QX10 is still up for grabs.
