Nikon P7800 and S02 previews: New Coolpix cameras span the range from ...

Nikon just took the wraps off two new fixed-lens cameras for its Coolpix line: The Nikon P7800 enthusiast compact, and the sleek little Nikon S02 point-and-shoot. Both replace existing models, and bring some very worthwhile upgrades.

The Nikon P7800 follows on from last year’s P7700, and it keeps its 12.2-megapixel 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor, as well as its bright 28-200mm f/2.0 – f/4.0 lens. One key upgrade is sure to be popular because it answers a key concern with the earlier camera. The viewfinder that was dropped in the P7700 is back, although now it’s an electronic type.

The Nikon P7800 also gets a brighter, lower-power RGBW LCD monitor, which is still articulated for framing from difficult angles. Another addition is support for Wi-Fi wireless data transfer via an optional accessory dongle.

Available from September 2013, the Nikon P7800 carries a list price of US$550. For more details, read our Nikon P7800 preview!

The Nikon S02 point-and-shoot, meanwhile, retains its predecessor’s extremely compact size and sleek, unassuming lines. Here, the upgrades are all about improving how it performs: There’s a brand-new 13.2-megapixel CMOS imager and a bigger 2.7-inch touch screen LCD. Nikon has also added Full HD movie capture, and a greater selection of special effects filters.

Also available in September, the Nikon S02 carries list pricing of US$180. Four color choices are planned: silver, white, blue and pink. For more information, read our Nikon S02 preview!
