Nikon 1 AW1 Waterproof Camera Specifications and Review

First of all, there are already a lot of water and shock proof cameras that are roaming the worldwide market. But according to its makers, the new Nikon 1 AW1 is the first camera in the world with interchangeable lenses that are both water proof and shock proof. Although Nikon already made a similar product before which is the Nikinos water proof film SLR, the 1 AW1 is a product with a lot of fresher innovation.

For one, it is the first compact system camera and digital snapper that features resiliency against water. The latest Nikon camera is waterproof up to at least 15m, shock proof up to at least 2m, freeze proof up to a temperature that reaches -10degrees Celsius and dust proof. Specification-wise, the 1 AW1 has similar features as the Nikon 1 J3 making it exhibit the same 14.2MP CX-format CMOS sensor. The said gadget has an altimeter, depth gauge, electronic compass and can also capture underwater video in full HD.

In terms of the physical build, the Nikon 1 AW1?s design is slightly bulkier and chunkier because of the added controls and buttons to support and suit the underwater features. The entire body is not as grippy as expected which made it risky for accidental drops. It happened in the preview of the said gadget more than a few times but the good news is that the shock proof claims seem to be true. The dropped 1 AW1 survived without a scratch.

When it comes to interchangeable lenses, the 1 AW1 is compatible with Nikon’s full variety of CSC lenses. However, there are only two which can be used underwater. These are the 1 NIKKOR AW 11–27.5mm f/3.5–5.6 zoom and 1 NIKKOR AW 10mm f/2.8 wide-angle lens. On the other hand, Nikon is reported to be producing CF-N6000 silicone jackets which should be available for customers to add as extra protection for their new gadgets.

In general, the new Nikon 1 AW 1 is an interesting gadget but it is possible that it can become a niche product. It seems that it is sitting between underwater CSCs and action cameras which is what sports fans are more comfortable in using. Obviously, the 1 AW 1 is not as much of an action camera. However, for a first impression, the latest Nikon camera is doing pretty good. It will be released in October 10 and will be sold between £749.99 anda £949.99 depending on the lens.
