The Photo Times: First look at National Geographic photography competition entries

A brown bear cub waves while its mother hunts salmon in Alaska; a solitary chameleon strides through Madagascar’s Baobab Alley and a short-eared owl plays peekaboo in Kuwait.

These are some of the first entries to the National Geographic Traveler’s prestigious photography competition, now in its 26th year.

The contest invites anyone with a camera to submit their photographs in four categories: Travel Portraits, Outdoor Scenes, Sense of Place, and Spontaneous Moments.

Throughout the contest, National Geographic Traveler magazine photo editors will publish their favorite entries every week at nationalgeographic.com/travelerphotocontest.

Budding photographers have until June 30 to enter photographs for a chance to win the grand prize, an eight-day expedition to Alaska for two aboard the National Geographic Sea Bird.Â

‘While watching her mother dive for salmon in the frigid glacier water of the Crescent River this young brown bear cub couldnÂ¿t contain her excitement and stood up on her rear legs and politely made a waving direction towards me. In a matter of one hour this young cub ate several salmon that were provided by her intelligent and fearless mother. Deep in the Alaskan wilderness this brown bear family provided my favorite image of the year.’

Fanfare by Lace Andersen: ‘Winter season on Kauai translates to large ocean swells and slightly cooler temperatures. When the first large swell passed through the islands I embarked on my inaugural wave hunting expedition. It’s a tricky dance of timing, being patient, and juggling settings on the camera. Every wave that explodes into the air is uniquely defined by its environment.’

Chameleon on the walk by Robert Hradil: ‘Chameleons are amazing lizards. Their vision, walking or hunting skills are one of the worlds top extraordinary things most people know about. We found this one walking on the road at the Baobabs Alley on west cost of Madagascar. This species is one of the large ones, you can find the smallest on the other side of Madagascar in tropical forests.’
